Mechanism of Action

Varenicline solution nasal spray (VNS) in dry eye disease treatment is believed to*:

  1. Bind to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) and activate the trigeminal parasympathetic pathway1
  2. Activate the parasympathetic pathway via the trigeminal nerve stimulating the lacrimal functional unit (LFU) to produce complete tear film1-3
  3. Innervate the lacrimal glands, meibomian glands, and goblet cells, resulting in increased basal tear film production1-3
